Isabel Díez

Isabel Díez approaches photography as a way of looking beyond the obvious. Her images balance observation and intuition, moving between representation and abstraction while remaining deeply connected to the natural world. Rooted in a sensitivity to place, light, and atmosphere, her work invites viewers to slow down and engage with uncertainty, emotion, and discovery. Rather than offering definitive descriptions of a landscape, Isabel Díez creates photographs that leave space for interpretation, transforming familiar natural subjects into experiences shaped as much by feeling and perception as by what is physically present.

Isabel Díez approaches photography as both a creative practice and a means of personal exploration. While her professional background as a marine biologist shaped her ability to observe and analyze the natural world, she describes photography as the medium through which she most effectively expresses herself. Creativity has long been part of her life through painting and other artistic activities, but photography became the place where intuition, observation, and emotion could coexist most naturally.

Nature is the foundation of her work. She explains that her energy feels strongest when she is immersed in wild and well-preserved environments, particularly along the coast where she feels most at home. Although she photographs landscapes, her interest extends beyond recording their appearance. Instead, she seeks to create a world of emotions and feelings through the subjects she encounters.

Her work often focuses on intimate landscapes and details rather than expansive views. She is especially interested in the transition between abstraction and representation, where an image initially appears abstract before gradually revealing recognizable elements. This interaction between perception and interpretation forms an important part of her visual language.

Throughout her projects, Isabel Díez combines intuition with careful observation. Her photographs emerge from curiosity, wonder, and direct engagement with nature, creating work that reflects both personal experience and an ongoing exploration of the natural world.

Thoughts Behind the Work

"I stop thinking and let myself just experience and feel."

Photography Approach

Isabel Díez explains that her photographic process is shaped by a balance between intuition and observation. As a scientist, she values curiosity and close attention to natural phenomena, yet she emphasizes that her photographs are largely intuitive responses to what she experiences in the field.

She often reacts to surprise and wonder when photographing. Sometimes she follows a predefined idea connected to an ongoing project, while at other times she remains open to unexpected discoveries. These moments of astonishment become the starting point for a much longer process of exploration, observation, and image development.

Her visual language is centered on intimate landscapes and details where abstract and figurative elements coexist. She is fascinated by photographs that initially appear abstract and then gradually reveal their connection to reality. For her, this transition encourages active participation from the viewer and creates opportunities for interpretation.

Project development also plays an important role in her practice. Isabel Díez generally follows a top-down approach, beginning with project statements, objectives, and planning before creating photographs. Long-term projects allow her to revisit locations repeatedly, deepen her understanding of a subject, and build coherent photographic series. Through repetition and sustained observation, she discovers details and relationships that might otherwise remain unseen.

Inside Voice of the Eyes

Within Voice of the Eyes, Isabel Díez contributes a perspective that bridges scientific observation and artistic intuition. Her interview explores photography as a space where curiosity, emotion, and personal discovery intersect. Rather than approaching photography solely as image-making, she describes it as a process of experiencing, questioning, and engaging deeply with the natural world.

Throughout her reflections, nature emerges not simply as a subject but as a source of inspiration, energy, and contemplation. She repeatedly emphasizes the importance of wonder, curiosity, and emotional response, suggesting that photographs can create meaningful experiences for both creator and viewer.

Her discussion of abstraction and perception also offers insight into how images communicate beyond literal representation. By encouraging viewers to move between uncertainty and recognition, her photographs create opportunities for interpretation and personal connection.

Voice of the Eyes highlights photographers whose work reveals distinctive ways of seeing, and Isabel Díez's contribution reflects that goal through her thoughtful exploration of creativity, observation, and emotional engagement with nature.

Sample Question from the Interview

How do you describe your visual language?

I prefer to express myself creatively through intimate landscapes and details where I combine
abstract and figurative aspects. I am intrigued by the abstract component as it triggers an
initial surprise, which endows the image with a stronger expressive load as our imagination
has greater freedom to explore. However, shortly afterwards, it is stimulating to interact with the
image and find an explanation for what is happening in the scene. Above all, I am especially
intrigued by that transition from abstraction to figuration in the perception of the observer. The
first impression is from a sense of abstraction, but then there is a transit filled in by whoever sees
the photo until it is placed in the realm of figuration and reality.
