Samuel Bitton is a Swiss landscape photographer and mountaineer whose work is deeply connected to mountain environments and the emotional experiences associated with them. Mountains have been an important part of his life since childhood and gradually became central to both his personal and creative world after moving to Switzerland.

He describes mountains as places that create powerful emotional responses and moments of reflection. Their scale can inspire feelings of wonder while also creating a sense of humility in relation to nature and life itself. Mountaineering and climbing also became important influences, providing experiences that extended beyond physical activity and contributing to broader lessons about judgment, risk, and personal growth.

Photography emerged from a desire to combine visual sensitivity with creativity. Rather than using words, he explains photography as a way of visually expressing emotions and experiences. Through panoramic landscapes and immersive imagery, his work often seeks to communicate emotional responses and moments of connection with the natural world.

His photographs are closely tied to experience rather than observation alone. The resulting images reflect a relationship with mountains that combines visual exploration with personal meaning and emotional presence.

Thoughts Behind the Work

"It is a way of visually writing down my inner emotions."

Photography Approach

Samuel Bitton approaches photography through experience and emotional response rather than rigid structures or predefined concepts. Time spent in the mountains often begins without the primary intention of creating photographs. Walking, climbing, and experiencing nature itself remain important parts of the process, with photographs emerging naturally from those experiences.

Color plays an important role within his visual language. He describes being highly sensitive to color and often reacts instinctively to combinations of tones and atmosphere before identifying specific subjects or compositions. Light and color become visual elements that shape emotional response within the landscape.

He also values freedom within creativity and prefers avoiding unnecessary pressure or forced expectations. Rather than pursuing stylistic change for its own sake, he explains that he prefers trusting instinct and personal response. This approach allows photographs to develop through genuine experience rather than through external expectations.

Across his work, photography becomes closely connected to emotional presence and personal interpretation within natural environments.

Inside Voice of the Eyes

Mountains emerge as a recurring theme throughout the discussion. He describes their influence not only as subjects but also as environments that shape emotional experience and personal understanding. The conversation also explores his attraction to color, atmosphere, and moments that create lasting emotional responses.

The interview further reveals reflections on creativity, intuition, and personal expression. Rather than imposing strict concepts on his work, he describes allowing experience and emotional reactions to guide the images he creates.

Sample Question from the Interview

What makes you react at first in the field to take out your camera?

Color. I have always been very sensitive to that aspect in all artistic work, so it comes as no
surprise that my own work in photography is very influenced by colors. I can’t really explain it. I
just “work” that way. Sometimes, even if there is no interesting subject or composition in what I see,
just a combination of beautiful colors will make me want to take a photograph. And I tend to
enjoy more yellow hues than greens or blues. So, I am evidently drawn to early morning and late
evening lights.
